Housed in one of the most stunning renovated courtyard spaces in Beijing, this Vietnamese restaurant offers very good food and commendable service. The Vietnamese spring rolls are a must-order, as is the la vong fish. House cocktails are good, too.

I have been to Susu for lunch and dinner. Both excellent. They use very fresh ingredients and you can taste it. I love their Banh mi sandwiches, the bread is so good, as well the patee spread on it. My favourite roll is the one which has lightly deep fried fish in it and the dipping sauce compliments it well. Papaya beef salad also very nice. I like the decor at Susu. Service is good too.
I don’t make it to Susu often but it’s only because it’s a bit out of the way. The restaurant is worth the trip in so many ways. One reason to go is the courtyard and neighborhood it’s located within. Nothing impresses out of town visitors more than winding your way through areas they would never be able to navigate on their own only to wind up in a posh restaurant hidden behind a red unmarked door. Design wise the owner did an amazing job - colonial feel built into traditional Chinese / Beijing architecture. Love the hanging factory styled lights. Right now the courtyard is about is good as it will get. The tree is fully leaved and the mosquitoes have yet to take flight. Food wise, I firmly believe that this is the best Vietnamese food you’re going to find in Northern China. The chef is Vietnamese and was hired directly from Vietnam for this job. His Pho, fresh rolls, bbq’d fish are my personal favorites. Drink wise, the bartender uses fresh ingredients to whip up some impressive cocktails. And they have a good selection of beers that include those from slow boat brewery. Service is professional and prompt but largely unable to navigate anything beyond rudimentary English. Although this restaurant isn’t the most expensive in town you will be asked to pay for the quality that you receive so either bring plenty of money, your credit card or both.
Another great original concept in Beijing. I love the very beautiful courtyard and the very nice trees on the top floor. The food is very like the real Vietnam food and the owners are there to help you decide the menus and the nice beers. I think this place should win some awards in Beijing. I just wish people would recognize what makes a place very good. Thank you Susu I will come back many times.
Charming and delightful restaurant! Tucked away and hidden down a hutong alley, but so worth the efforts to find. The decor is simple but bright and attractive. The food is fresh, very nicely presented, tasty and authentic. They have a great patio for outdoor dining and I'm looking forward to my return when the weather heats up.
Not a salad person, but loved loved loved Susu's salads. They taste so sublime, and have wonderful texture. I was expecting good food here based on other reviews, and they had it--but the cocktails are wonderful too. I'll definitely go back.
Absolutely adore this place! It was a romantic dimly-lit dinner with GREAT food. We order the papaya salad with shrimp (my favorite) and the beef stew which came with a baguette rather than the typical bowl of rice. Everything about the dish was perfect. The only thing is that the service was rather slow even with only a few diners at the time. Hard to find but totally worth it!
If there was ever a surprise to be found in a back alley down one of Beijing's hutongs, it is Susu. The restaurant and the outside street is the difference between looking at night and day. Stunning interior, fantastic decor, excellent atmosphere. It's quiet no matter where one is sitting in the restaurant. They don't have the biggest menu, but I dare one to find a dish that doesn't live up to one's expectations.
had a fine repast here tonight, the highlight was the snakehead fish. sounds terrible but is amazing. especially the novel--but not intimidating--method to eat it. what else to say? everything about this place is right on. decor. service. cocktails. prices. everyone must try this place. many will become regulars.

Down the end of a squiggle of hutongs, Susu is not exactly on the beaten track. But this place is worth finding, and—given the crowd on a Friday night three weeks in—many have already made the effort. The ambiance is exceptional, the service commendable and the food, while not perfect, is good for Vietnamese in Beijing.
[HTML_REMOVED] We’ve seen a lot of renovated courtyards, but none quite so stunning as Susu. The gorgeous outdoor area and semi-private rooftop seating, coupled with perfect lighting and lovely interior décor, will leave diners fantasizing about the possibilities for hutong gentrification.
[HTML_REMOVED] Susu serves a good selection of large, beautifully presented Vietnamese spring rolls. The classic shrimp and pork roll (¥38) tastes of summer gardens, with its plentiful portions of fresh cilantro, mint and tender mango. Only the overly thick skin keeps it from reaching full potential. The papaya beef salad (¥42) is crunchy and bright, with juicy cuts of beef and subtly sweet, tropical undertones. The chicken pho (¥42) is good for Beijing, but despite the tasty broth, the flavors are so clean and simple that they verge on bland. A house specialty, the la vong fish (¥108) is served on a huge bed of fennel, and both are mixed together with vermicelli, fresh herbs, crushed peanuts, rice crackers, and a shrimp and fish gravy that brings the whole thing together. Cocktails are good, too—get the Saigon fizz (¥50), a refreshing mix of gin and ginger.
[HTML_REMOVED] A large number of dishes can be made vegetarian on request, which is just one of the ways the restaurant goes out of its way to accommodate. Servers’ abilities to anticipate guests’ needs and give recommendations, as well as their flexibility and English skills, are all impressive.
