This wildly popular neighborhood gem serves up spicy Sichuan dishes for lower than average prices. Make sure to order the dan dan mian, as well as the shangxin liangfen. Zhang Mama is one bustling place—either get there early, or come after the dinner rush to avoid waiting in line out the door.

After the last review I had to register for a cityweekend account to defend the honor of the hallowed ground that is Zhang Mama. I wish I could give this restaurant 10 stars. If you are worried about dinner taking a long time or having to wait in a line to get into this small restaurant then stick with a terrible restaurant with no loyal customers. Zhang Mama is packed every single night of the week for a simple reason: they have the best (and cheapest) sichuan cuisine in town. I have dined at Zhang Mama ~10 times and the waitstaff has never been anything less than great. They have always been very accommodating with my limited putonghua and quick to get my 4 RMB Yanjing.
Great place to eat
This place offers decent (spicy!) Sichuan, but has the slowest waitress in the world! She mopes around, shuffling from table to table in pure sadness. I felt bad for the poor lady. Luckily the restaurant is tiny and there are only about seven tables so she doesn't have to shuffle too far. If you go, be prepared for a long dinner as dishes come out one at a time over the course of an hour or more.
The best huiguorou in town.. also make sure you order the zhong jiaozi and the boboji for the spicy/sweet combo. Not your typical Sichuan joint. We loved it - it was worth the hour wait on a Fri night
