City Weekend says

This little delivery-service-turned-restaurant is one of the more authentic slices of America in Beijing, with tasty burgers, barbecue and other American favorites at extremely reasonable prices. Service, though, can get overwhelmed, and the outdoor patio offers a far more comfortable environment than the hot, smoky interior.

[HTML_REMOVED]Busy Barbecue[HTML_REMOVED]

[HTML_REMOVED] With a menu of down home cuisine, country music playing and classic cowboy movies projected onto the wall, this little delivery-service-turned-restaurant is one of the more authentic slices of America in Beijing. But news of Home Plate’s opening has traveled fast, and the place is overwhelmed. Despite the tasty food and great value, we’d wait a while before returning.

[HTML_REMOVED] Demand exceeds supply here, and while this mostly affects service, it also has an impact on the food. On the night we visited, the restaurant was out of brisket—its central barbecue item. Instead, we tried the BBQ chicken sandwich (¥30), which is sweet and saucy, although pretty messy to eat. The cheeseburger is also messy, but in the best way possible. The ground beef patty is juicy, the pickles are delicious and the buns are fresh and homemade. It’s a total bargain at ¥30. Buffalo wings (¥38) here are smokier and spicier than other versions in Beijing, with super crispy, sauce-laden skin. The bleu cheese sauce is excellent, but the serving is only enough for a couple wings. You can ask for more, but that’s easier said than done if the restaurant is full.

[HTML_REMOVED] The Chinese waitresses speak good English, and service is well meaning, but it is overwhelmed and uncoordinated. We felt forgotten, as if we were inconveniencing the staff by being there, from our arrival to our failed attempts to get a seat outside. And you definitely want to sit outside here, as the small indoor section is sweltering and smoky from the barbecue.

This barbecue is absolutely amazing. You can't go wrong with its pulled pork sandwiches or burgers.

Went the other day, I've been about 1/2 dz times - I dont know it's like ok - for me when I'm close by and want a cheep American sandwich it fills the need - but great BBQ it is not, nothing like Texas not even close, in Texas the brisket is black on the outside form being smoked for long time to develope the "Bark" still succulent, full of flavor and with a dab fo sauce OMG!

The burgers are ok

Top reasons to go to home plate BBQ: their pulled pork sandwich is a show stopper. The bun is exceptional as is the pulled pork and coleslaw piled high inside. I’ve found that it’s best with an extra helping of sauce in the brownish bottle. Service: not always the best but always the best intentioned. The owners genuinely care who you are and if you enjoyed your meal. I’ve never been there when the owners weren’t. Selection: Bourbon selection is among (if not) the best in Beijing. Their bottled beer selection is very strong. Slow Boat Beers are on tap. It doesn’t get better than that. Music: genuine American music. Outdoor: seating outside is perfect for spending a night laughing, eating, and drinking with friends.

This is currently one of my favorite restaurants in Beijing. The food is incredible and very reasonably priced. It is so nice to get some delicious American BBQ and have a nice American beer that is not Budweiser.

I kinda regret going there today... it'll be a bad thing for my diet! It was a great deal (didn't expect it to be so cheap!), the service was good, and the food, the food was so tasty! I had the pork sandwich with a side of beans... can't wait to come back.

The place isn't fancy - but then, it isn't pretending to be. With it's basic, simple interior, very reasonable prices, and decent food, Homeplate is a place that will satisfy - even if it won't 'wow'. We tried the pulled-pork and pulled-beef sandwiches, both of which were tasty and filling. The okra starter was good, and we would go back to try their other dishes - the other burgers, fries, and apple pie all look very tempting! The cold red velvet cupcake we had was a little odd - almost as if it had just finished defrosting. Overall, a reasonable experience - helped by the friendly manager - and although not a place to write home about, it's definitely a place we would try again - and are happy to have in Bejiing's north-east neighbourhood!

At last, a bbq place in Beijing with a real smoker and just as important, someone who understands how to use it. The brick smoker is right by the front door, in front of the bar where you can watch them stoke the fire and work the meat. Just as interesting, the kitchen is large, open and well equipped. This is a place that understands food. Pulled pork rocked, the brisket was good and the sides that I had were excellent. Certainly the best smoked meats I have had in Beijing so far. The only thing that I can complain about was the chocolate chip cookie (not enough sugar or choc chips) but how the heck can you ding a bbq place a star for cookies? Besides, the peanut butter ones were awesome.

Home Plate met my hankering for ribs and beer (SLOW BOAT ON TAP!) last night. Because the portion (a half-rack) was so huge, I just finished it for breakfast. My fingers are sticky and my mouth feels quite peppery, and it is so, so worth it. Another great thing is that their house-smoked ears of corn are so delicious, not at all gummy like some Chinese corn can be. I would have preferred having the corn served hot, though, so the butter could melt and glisten all over that ear.

Argh! Worst news of this year... Homeplate stop deliver food... I was probably their best customer and their best promoter... burger was so great, french fries and the chocolate cookies...holy g* .. like a drug! What happened??? I went to their new restaurant and I ate enchiladas... perfect, better than mexican restaurant in beijing! But they still don't have chocolate cookies... There is a problem of logistic... I don't know... but it's so good!

** It is also because it's pretty cheap, price of a Mc donald meal so the choice is fast.

Buffalo wings are so, so good. I love all the appetizers here and tried that pulled pork sandwich. Really tasty (although can't finish the whole thing, that's a lotta meat!). They have great American beer, so you don't have to order any crappy Buds, unless you're into that sort of watery stuff.

The veggie burger, however, wasn't great. It confirmed my doubts that I couldn't ever bring a vegetarian here. I can't. Too bad.

Best pulled pork sandwich in Beijing hands-down - the coleslaw is a great complement to the meat. Went back for more and was disappointed with their dry ribs and dry beef brisket. Nothing else on the menu seems to compare with the pulled pork. Waitress was rude and full of it and should know that her sh** does stink.

I wont repeat what most others have said before... It's all true, food is totally terrific. With the exception of one particularly grumpy waitress, service is generally well-meaning and friendly but it is clumsy and disorganised, forgetting items we ordered, cutlery etc. These things are fixable so I'm still giving 4 stars cos the food really is great.

Having heard a lot about this restaurant I tried it for lunch today. The pulled pork sandwich is as authentic as they come. Authentic light bread bun, pulled pork with plenty of sauce topped with coleslaw. Can’t wait to come back for the ribs.

Went to this restaurant for my first American food experience, I was impressed. Corn was good. Quesadilla was amazing, it is a lot better than some of the "Mexican" restaurants in Beijing. BBQ chopped beef was a little bit dry, but the BBQ ribs were delicious.

Good selection of non-alcoholic drinks and friendly owners. ------ I will be back!

Ate here the other day. The pulled pork sandwich was its usual hit, and has even converted my wife who is not only prefers meatless veggie meals, but more importantly has always had a strong aversion to pork. This one she loves though. The cheeseburger was also great, which we had to try after seeing it take so many rounds in a recent burger battle, but the brisket is where we were seriously let down. Despite my wife begging that I stick with the proven favorite of the pulled-pork, i wanted to try something else on the menu. Bad choice. The brisket sandwich was just so tasteless and dry that I really couldn't bother finishing it. It really was just a waste of my time and money. I did see who appeared to be the American owner popping in and out of the dining hall but by the time I wanted to pull him aside and mention, he was gone, and I just didnt have the energy to explain with my broken Chinese to the waitress. bottom line is: the pulled-pork sandwich is awesome but please, Home Plate, a bit of quality control on the brisket!

There is a reason people are talking about Home Plate. The restaurant has managed to challenge the rest of the city's barbecue establishments in the short time Home Plate has been open. The restaurant knows how to cook up some good eats. One could make the argument that the sandwiches are on the small side, but for the price of things, that only means I am ordering two. PS — two words: fried pickles. Oh, indeed.

Went here a week or two after it opened, when you could still get a seat. And to be honest, I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. There were four of us at the table, and not a one of us was happy with what we ordered.

I mean, have a look at the "chili cheese fries" in the picture. Do those look like chili cheese fries to you? Of course not! They look like french fries topped with ground beef and a little bit of cheese. That's exactly what our order of the things looked like, and they tasted about like you'd expect ground beef and french fries to taste together.

Everyone's making a huge deal about this place, so I might give it another shot just to confirm that I'm not crazy, but was not impressed in my first visit.
