The topic of “Wave” Series 5 is Voyeurism and the Opposite of Sex. This philosophical experiment by the WAVE community combines art performance, democratic drama in a public space and Restroom, a work of video art by female artist Cui Youwen.

We hope to use this “action art”/improvised performance to explore the concepts of voyeurism and privacy, and reevaluate various scandals that have shaped Chinese society and morality.

In 2000, artist Cui Youwen spent one month taking secret video footage in a restroom inside the most infamous night club in Beijing, PASSION (recently shut down in a government anti-porn crackdown.) Cui recorded all the intimate details and restroom interactions: girls working at the nightclub changing their clothes, counting their tips and complaining about their customers.

When Cui’s video Restroom was shown in an exhibition in Guangzhou in 2006, it caused a major controversy and led to the first lawsuit in China about art vs. public morality.

In addition to screening this video work, we have invited a group of rock musicians, writers, photographers, artists and friends to co-operate in an improvised drama. The players will take turns occupying three toilet stalls, talking about themselves and trading gossip about the city. In this performance, audience members are transformed into voyeurs, co-conspirators in the game.
