Teacher, singer, songwriter, sociologist, writer, organizer, Dr. Mark Levine is an American who came to China in 2005 and to Beijing in 2007 where he began teaching at Minzu University of China and where he still teaches today. In his two-and-one-half years in Beijing, he has also taught at the Beijing Dancing Academy, Renmin University of China and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

Dr. Levine has played guitar for more than 50 years. In 2007, drawing inspiration from his surroundings, he wrote the first of his “Stories from a Life in China,” American country music songs about his life in China. Three years later, he has now written nearly 50 musical stories which tell of his travels, events of the day (the winter of 2008, the Beijing Olympics, the Wenchuan Earthquake, the conditions faced by migrant works), his teaching and his love.

Since June, 2008 he has had nearly 80 performances in Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing and Hunan Province. He has performed in theaters, clubs, restaurants, bars, parks, trade shows, as well as on radio and television. His solo performances, called “Mark’s Stories from a Life in China” include not only a variety of his songs but also a selection of Chinese songs.

His performance at the 2008 Zhangjiajie International Country Music week, earned him the “Special Award” and the title “Father of Country Music in China” He has been heard on Beijing Radio and China Radio International more than a dozen times. He appeared on a special pre-Olympics show on China Educational Television (CETV1) in 2009, on Xing Guang Da Dao (Star Avenue) in 2009 and on the Beijing TV Global Gala in 2010.

In addition to writing songs, Dr. Levine has also had many articles published in several English-language magazines in China.

An invited lecturer at more than 30 universities in the US, he has also been invited to give public lectures at six Chinese universities.
