City Weekend says

Eduardo Vargas strikes again with this Peruvian kitchen and bar in Sinan Mansions. The bar is on the ground floor and slings high-tech, molecular-esque cocktails, many on the super-sweet side. Upstairs there's a dining room with excellently priced seven and 12-course dining options.

I had dinner at Chicha the other night as this was my second time there I was very happy. The first time we went was during the summer and I thought the food was rather bland with the exception being Hector the head bar mans fantastic Piscos. We went back the second time because it's the middle of winter and I needed something to take my mind the bitter Shanghai cold. The dishes this time were fantastic. My girlfriend is Taiwanese and had never had the opportunity to try Peruvian food before but she is a big seafood lover so I told our server who was very polite to give us some seafood options. We started with the ceviche and were very happy. The tangy sourness from the lime offset the soft octopus wonderfully. Our next course was a shared skewered platter, I can't remember the name but it started with an "A". After that we had seafood ice which was basically the ceviche dish with brown rice. This is not a bad thing. We were stuffed when the Chef Eduardo came to check on the table and checked on meals but it was nice to see the owner actually cooking and working the tables. We enjoyed a few Strawberry and Chocolate Caiprinhas which were a fine touch on a great evening

The best tapas I have ever had! So delicious! I highly recommend the tapas sample platter: a chance to try various combinations. We brought a number of our Shanghai visitors there and were never disappointed! (Unlike with "Las Tapas") The atmosphere is also very pleasant and relaxing. They also have nice drinks. And though I am not a dessert person, I always make an exclusion for this one! Please, keep up the good work!

Nice spanish whitbeer, excellent baked oysters with spinach mousse, tuna tartare on polenta, skewed grilled octopus (very well prepared!) with a small potatoe and everything with a spicy taste. Surprising and interesting combinations. And all that three times (so, you better go with a little group and try more of the various offers). The entrance area of the building could be a little bit more attractive and welcoming.

Was at Chicha a few weekends ago with friends for Sunday Brunch, and absolutely loved it. I had the Peruvian Breakfast, then some delicious pancakes because I'm a fat pig. The courteous and friendly staff were super accommodating (we needed a table outside, but in the shade). Afterwards, we sat out front with some really delicious Sangria and enjoyed the sun. Fabulous location to hang out - it's nice and quiet because it's half way between the F.C. and bund, so most of the 'brunchers' don't bother with it.

The only reason I'm giving this place 4 stars is because the sangria was a little weak in terms of alcohol content. Still delicious though!

Went there for a friend's b-day dinner, and after reading through these reviews, I was prepared for bad food. Instead, I was very impressed with the 200RMB tasting menu. It sampled a broad range of the dishes, I especially liked the appetizers: fresh ceviche, creamy causa (potato salad with tuna and avocado, yum!), and super tender pork chicharron. I didn't think that the food was "fusion" or find any hint of Asian flavors, which I enjoyed ("fusion" is just an excuse for chefs in Shanghai to be lazy and substitute cheaper ingredients!) The cod-fish with seafood cassoulet was divine and the Peruvian flan was good, just as good as the flan at Brasa used to be. Drinks, I'm sure are fantastic like everyone says, but I simply can't justify paying so much for a drink and not food! I just hope this place doesn't go downhill before I go for my second visit...

Again there .. Need to say by accident (Forced by a date); what can one do against that? Of course she hadn't been there before. I will omit my comments about the food; definitely not worth it. Drinkwise I need to admit the Mexican bartender is indeed talented; cocktails were a 9 out of 10. Food just horrid. Bartender is definitely a hit; I'm not a fan of cocktails and seldom drink anything combining more than a spirit and ice; but the bartender seems to be just fallen from heaven. Worth to say he lured me into a Pisco (almost forced) and I loved it. I just wonder if Chicha has such a good bartender( would dare to say better than the Alchemist, also the guy from the alchemist has too much attitude) how come the food is so dull. Ok, I already complaint about the food in my last review... but drinks are great; probably the best in town. Mmm just came to my mind poaching this bartender and having him fixing my office. Just recovering from a bad food poisoning but tomorrow will definitely try one of this guy mixes and i'm sure he will fix my stomach; Food, NO thanks; I'm sorry, I will dine first somewhere else, just for the drinks..

Very chill atmosphere and not too crowded. Excellent spot to grab a drink. I am now a huge fan of the pisco sours.

I went to Chicha yesterday with my friends, the food and drinks were excellent!!! To be honest, I'm a fussy eater but the food were really MUCH MUCH MORE than what I expected! We had the 12 courses menu, and every dish was full of flavour! No wander my friends highly recommanded me to go. By the way, the Mexican bartender makes really interesting cocktail. Try the cheesecake martin and chicha sour. You would never regret!

@rene_shanghai ... maybe I was too lazy to write two separate pieces of review, but simply put, I thoroughly enjoyed dining at Chicha and I enjoyed Mr. Vargas' intro....This is no self-review.....just new to the review scene....

Mmm, visited Chicha last week just to check out the Sinan Mansions. Have tried Vargas before, wonder how he is still around town. Food in most of his venues is average and over - priced. Of course as a good marketer he is more about PR and big talk than actual cuisine. Logic and common sense say that if he was such a good chef, his restaurants will stay around the scene longer... ??

Strange that @Yvonniu just posted the same comment in sm**rtshanghai, no serious reviewer would care on posting in both sites.... Self reviewing.. mmm not good.. that destroys the atmosphere for serious reviewers.

Food was dull and plain, and most of the dishes seemed to be out of place. It is basically a random collection of cheap dishes that just don't marry together. With this kind of "assortment" is even impossible to pick the wine. Also, seabass ceviche is not the smartest choice while dining in China... Probably a la carte would be better.

Best thing on the night was when he came over with the big talk... LOL , he creeped out my girlfriend, he looked like a dirty sweaty cook trying to talk like a chef .

After drinks better than food, please tell the chef to stay in the kitchen.

Recommended by a friend, we went to Chicha with the 4 of us last night. As it was my first time to be acquainted with the Peruvian cuisine, I did not know what to expect.

And guess what, I was absolutely stunned by Chicha - - the food, the drinks, the atmosphere and Mr. Vargas himself were just a great experience.

We went for the Menu Degustation with 12 courses and we loved every bit of the 12 courses…

Accompanied by (some) bottles of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, the sea bass, squid, prawns and beef prepared in a variety of taste and style were exquisite, but also surprisingly light in your stomach. No worries about gaining another couple of pounds ;)

The desert(s) were heavenly…..not that I have sweet tooth, but I really loved every bits of it.

Chicha just became one of favorite restaurant in Shanghai.
