The Gaelic craic is in abundance at this Shunyi hangout, where barman Pat Walsh has brought his Emerald Isle hospitality. With kitsch chairs framing a homey log burner, Green Cap serves winter warmers, from hearty Irish stew to perfect pours of Guinness.

This Charming Man
The Gaelic Craic is in abundance here at new Shunyi hangout The Green Cap Bar, as ex-Pomegranate man Pat Walsh applies his emerald isle hospitality to this intimate watering hole. After hiking the steep stairs next to the New Veranda restaurant and overlooking the lake at WAB you will be met with kitsch, mish-mashed chairs framing a homely log-burner, radiating a comforting charm that larger Shunyi alternatives distinctly lack. The same is true of the food, with comfort winter warmers ranging from hearty Irish stew (50 RMB) to triple cheese burgers (50RMB). Of course Guiness (50 RMB per pint) is a staple fixture here and the bar stocks a good selection of local and imported beers at reasonable prices. The onset of summer will double the bar’s potential capacity with use of the veranda and only time will tell whether the Shunyi gossip merry-go-round will lure residents from the walls of their compounds. If you can manage to negotiate the stairs on leaving you will swagger away admiring Walsh’s chutzpah, humming the remnants of the excellent music variety and willing The Green Cap to succeed.
